22.02.2019

Lviv is trying to solve the problem of solid household waste. The tragedy that took place three years ago in Hrybovychi became at the same time a catalyst for a new behavior and a new solution to the problem. However, some activists went wrong way by standing in opposition to the model, which is chosen by Lviv city council. This is what today, February 22, announced Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ostap Semerak, who has a work visit in our city. In the morning Minister met with Lviv students-ecologists and read an open lecture at the Ukrainian Catholic University.

“Today Lviv, Lviv City and Region Councils are making efforts to solve the problem of solid household waste. The event that occurred three years ago in Hrybovychi became a tragedy and at the same time a catalyst for a new behavior and a new solution to the problem. Local authorities do not go smoothly along this road. Work, formulation and stakeholder communication will ensure that these tasks will be carried out promptly and qualitatively, and will be inexpensive and environmentally friendly.
Discussions on this issue are being held in Lviv, in particular, at public hearings. However, some activists went wrong way by standing in opposition to the model, which is chosen by Lviv city council “, – said Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ostap Semerak during meeting with UCU students.

Cabinet of Ministers recently approved the National Waste Management Plan. This document defines tasks and practical measures that will allow Ukraine by 2030 move to a new model of behavior with waste like it is use to do in countries of  European Union.

“We are pleased that strategy, chosen by Lviv, coincides with the National Waste Management Plan, which takes into account European approaches to reform in this area. There is little left to the implementation of the project. The issue of building a waste treatment plant is now considering by the Ministry of Ecology. This is one of the last major steps that bring the construction of the plant closer to Lviv “, – said Vadym Nozdria, director of the LCE “Green City”.

Let’s remind, that Lviv comprehensively solves the issue of handling solid household waste. In two years, in the city will be build first in Ukraine modern waste treatment complex with European technology of mechanical and biological treatment of waste, rehabilitated old landfill and introduce new waste management system, which will provide sorting of dry and wet waste, secondary raw materials and arrangement of separate areas for collecting electronics, large-sized and construction waste.

Already this year will be opened composting station for organic waste. For these purposes, city received a loan of EUR 25 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, a grant of EUR 10 million – irrevocable financial assistance from environmental funds. The city contribution is 6.75 million euros.
